The team over at Masterclass brought me on board to create a graphic package for their project with the sleep diplomat, Matthew Walker. His curriculum focused on various scientific studies that define better sleep patterns across our lifespans. I primarily designed title graphics while also collaborating with a small team to design and animate the various in-class scientific diagrams.
 

I created 17 chapter titles and 42 subchapter animations that appear throughout Matthew Walker’s class. Each title environment was created using a particle system that pulls inspiration from the nerve structures of the human brain.

One direction I explored for the class graphics were in-camera shots of wires with light traveling across their surface. These graphics weren’t used for the final look, but some were used as compositing elements in the final 3D renders. The effect was created by projecting light patterns along clear fiber optic cables and filming them with a Blackmagic 6K camera.

One large challenge in this class was to re-design several of Matthew Walker’s scientific diagrams in a uniform style. We went with a simplified interface look so that the information would seem both informative but also approachable. I was fortunate to work with a small design and animation team including Brittnie Diamant, James Heredia and Anne Smith.

All the title visuals were created using a combination of Cinema4D and X-Particles, along with some practical effects for compositing. Each scene was rendered with Octane and I primarily used the practical effects footage as a light source within the 3D scenes.
